Memories

Memories is that part of my web site that deals with my experiences both as a child and in the world of work that may be of interest to others. "Memories" is in constant development. It details my work as an telephone engineer/manager with the GPO and BT and touches on some of the friends I made as well as later my 10 years as a business adviser with Business Link.

Hello

I now have a problem that Caxton would have envied. I have the technology to publish to the world and do not know what to say. That is, I have plenty to say but do not know what you dear reader are interested in reading. We are all set in time and space and are influenced by things of those times and those places. I begin with this as my starting point.

I was a child of England at war. Born in a place on the fringes of that war - Somerset. My father was in the army, the regiment - the Gordon Highlanders - with whom he served along with many other Londoners. My mother had moved away from war torn London to be near him at Dunster and I was born in a small nursing home in Minehead. With my mother we lived as evacuees in Tollgate Cottage Dunster with oil lamps for lighting, a range for cooking, and a copper for washing clothes. A single cold tap in the kitchen was the only running water and the WC was around the side of the cottage, a cold damp place "peopled" with large hairy spiders living in every nook and cranny. Therefore from a place set in 1940s England through the use of candles & oil lamps I feel I have touched the lives of people of the 1840s who lived similar but even harder lives.

A different time, a different place.
