George Reynolds collection of Scouting memorabilia

George Reynolds 1926 - 2002

“George” was a life long Scout who served Scouting in many responsible positions both at District and County level.

As a leader in 3^rd Minehead Scout Group and later as GSL and President of 1st Exmoor Scouts he always lived his life guided by the principles and aims of Scouting.

“Trusty, Loyal & Helpful, Brotherly, Courteous, Kind.

Obedient, Smiling and Thrifty, Clean in body and mind.”

His wisdom, guidance, boundless, enthusiasm and sense of humor have been a positive influence to many generations of brother Scouts, Leaders & friends of West Somerset District & Somerset County.

His particular interest was camping & Camp Fire Leadership and he had extensive Jamboree experience at County & World level.

During a lifetime of active scouting George built up an extensive collection of scouting memorabilia.

Following his sudden death in 2002 his extensive collection was placed in the care of West Somerset Scout Fellowship of which George was a leading member.

This collection formed the basis of an exhibition in Minehead in 2002. The collection was then stored by George’s good friends Faith and John Burt in their home.

In 2008 it was decided that the collection should be placed on long term loan in the archives at the Somerset Scout HQs at Tangier. This decision followed an approach by Peter Bourner, the scout counties archivist, and a visit by a number of WSSF members to Tangier to see the facilities.

1. The members of WSSF wish that the integrity of George’s collection is maintained during its period of loan to the Somerset Scouts collection at their HQs at Tangier Taunton.

2. From time to time the whole or part of the collection may be required by West Somerset Scouts to support their local scouting activities.

3. West Somerset Scout Groups will be updated as to the location of the collection and it is expected that Somerset Scouts will allow reasonable access to the collection by all interested parties both in and outside of the Scouting movement..

All the above items were handed over to Peter Bourner at Tangier County Scout HQ on the 20^th October 2008 for safe keeping/long term loan.

As of 20/10/08 the remaining part of George’s collection consisting of numerous scout badges and pennants has been retained in the safe custody of WSSF pending detailed cataloguing. When this is completed the intention is that this part of the collection is handed over to the Somerset Scout County Archives to join the rest of the collection on long term loan.

It is the intention and requirement of the current custodians of “The George Reynolds Collection”, namely West Somerset Scout Fellowship that the ownership of the collection is retained by West Somerset Scouts and that its integrity is maintained during its loan to Somerset Scouts.
