WEST SOMERSET SCOUT FELLOWSHIP

Minutes of West Somerset Scout Fellowship committee  meeting No.1 held at 28 Queens Road Minehead on Wednesday 6th May 2009 at 19.30

Present

Jane Butland, Jean Mote, John Burt, John McGuire, Pete Curtis & Ron Blundell (Chair)

Ron welcomed the committee to its first meeting and asked  members  their views on the purpose of the WSSF. It was agreed that there were two elements to our function namely supporting scouting and organising a social program that kept members together.

These two agreed aims tied in nicely with the official view that is outlined in a document that can be found at: http://www.scouts.org.uk/fellowship/Resources/remit_review.pdf

Part of this document was circulated at the meeting.

Members were given a copy of the Chairman’s report to the recent SF AGM which detailed our past years program in terms of service to scouting and social events and Ron apologised for omitting the Quiz/ Cheese and wine evening from the social events. This summary was used as a reference later in the meeting when future events were considered.

The purpose of the committee was then discussed and it was agreed that its main purpose was to support the SF officers and develop a scouting support and social program. No individual roles were identified and Ron agreed the produce minutes for this first meeting.

Members felt that they were generally unaware of the support needs of local scouting  without specific requests for assistance. They were surprised that it was thought that no regular district program planning meetings were held by leaders and there was no District program published. They felt that it was essential that they were given good notice of events together with all the details before they could commit to SF support.

Members raised their current lack of knowledge of section training schemes and this  was discussed with the possibility of training for SF members – no decisions were made on these matters.

Ron said he was pleased to hear that SF members representatives were offering support but cautioned on what we may be able to deliver in practice. However he was aware that help may be requested to support further local practical skills training for leaders which some members may be able to assist with – no details available from the DC/TA secretary at present.
